OPRAH Winfrey, queen of America’s talk show circuit, has warned Rihanna against reconciling with her fiance Chris Brown. Winfrey, a tireless campaigner against domestic violence, urged the couple to seek counselling together.

Speaking on her talk show, she said: “It makes me so sad. The truth is that both Chris Brown and Rihanna, if I were your friend, I’d call and say ‘Give it some time, get yourself counselling, take care of yourself and heal yourself first.’

“Love doesn’t hurt and if a man hits you once, he will hit you again. I don’t care what his plea is — he will hit you again.”

Rihanna — real name Robyn Fenty — was allegedly assaulted by R&B musician Brown, 19, on the eve of last month’s Grammy Awards. It was claimed the attack started after Rihanna, 20, discovered a text message sent to Brown from another woman.

Brown appeared in court last Thursday charged with assault and making criminal threats. If convicted, he faces up to four years in prison.

Addressing her audience, Winfrey added: “I want to do a show this month dedicated to all the Rihannas of the world. “In our country, the statistic is one out of four women being battered by their boyfriends. “Most don’t tell because they’re afraid that if they do, (their abusive boyfriends) will break up with them.”

Meanwhile, sources close to Rihanna disclosed to The Daily Telegraph that the ordeal continues to take a heavy emotional toll on the singer.

One said: “She’s absolutely humiliated and scared to show her face in public. She feels the whole world is judging her.” The confidante added that Rihanna feels “torn” between supporting her fiance and obeying the wishes of her family who, like Winfrey, are said to staunchly oppose a reconciliation.

Since the alleged attack, the singer has appeared to have fully forgiven Brown, with reports claiming she intends to testify in court on his behalf.
